Homeschooling During Hard Times

Homeschool, New to homeschool, how do i homeschool
This time in our lives has been crazy. The Covid -19 Coronavirus Pandemic has left us all in strange places in life with constant worry and anxiety.
There is so much going on, and yet nothing much happening due to stay at home orders. Now many places have mask mandates when you do go out.
It is all hard to explain to our kids without scaring them.

So many are questioning what to do when school is supposed to start again. Will schools be opening and if so when? Will they be doing online school and if so how will that work? With so many unknowns, people are considering Homeschooling more seriously. And I say "Good for them! Let's jump in"!

I can tell you that right now, our homeschool looks nothing like it did a few months ago.
Even though we are called Homeschoolers, we didn't actually stay home much. We went to the Library, parks, friends houses, field trips, group events, church, girl scouts, and so much more. We rarely had a stay at home day. This Pandemic has hit us just as hard as everyone else.

Stay home, save lives became the slogan to live by. That is hard for those of us that were almost never home.

Telling your kids that they can only see their friends over the computer and not in person is not fun. They don't understand why all of a sudden their friends aren't safe to see. We went from seeing people just about every day, to not at all. We are huggers and really missing them!

During this time we are focusing on family rather than academics.

We have done some sit down work, but a lot more fun schooling.

We have been playing games like Ticket to Ride, Dragon Wood, Dragon Realm, USA Puzzles, Kids Apples to Apples, etc. Games are fun but they are also learning a lot of critical thinking  and planning skills. With Dragon Wood, they are working on basic math skills by adding the dice.

They can learn so much from playing games.
We mostly have just been enjoying being with each other.

Taking more time to read together, more bike rides, and more jumping in the water on the trampoline. Building family bonds has always been toward the top of our list, but now it is more important then ever. Our family is more tight nit than a lot and I attribute that to Homeschooling.

My final advice: Just have fun and enjoy each other! Learning is a life long process, but time with family can be limited.
