Skill Sharpeners for Grades PreK, K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Geography is one of the subjects that can get boring. Am I right?

We decided to try Evan Moor's Geography Skill Sharpeners. We chose grade 1 even though the kids are 2nd and 5th grade.

I did that so Ella, the oldest, could teach it to her brother and sister.

The twins were also able to easily understand what they were doing without my help!

The pages are full color and that really attracts the attention of kids, and me.

It makes it more fun to complete the activities. This was far from boring!

The book has three different types of skills to learn. Reading, Vocabulary, and Hands On!

It covers the world in Spatial Terms, Places and Regions, Physical Systems, Human Systems, and Environment and Society.

I went through the book and decided to choose one or two activities from every category in the book.

I plan to keep going through the subjects that way so they get a variety instead of sticking in each area.

Activities We Have Completed So Far!

The first activity I chose for the kids to complete is from the Places and Regions area.

They cut apart the map puzzle. It was mixed up and they had to put the pieces together to create the map.

They had a lot of fun fitting the pieces together.

Next, I chose another of the hands on activities from the Environment and Society section.

For this one they cut the pieces, folded them, and glued them on the page. It made a stand up picture.

They completed the vocabulary page that went with the farm pages and learned new terms.

In the Physical Systems section, we chose a picture and word match activity!

The cut the pieces out, read the words, and matched them to the pictures.

Ella had them do it separately and then together for more review.

From the Human Systems section the kids chose to complete a supermarket shelf.

They cut out all the pictures and sorted them into two piles.

One pile for things that you find in the supermarket and one pile for things that you would not find in a store!

Then they created the shelves with the items and glued them on to complete their supermarket picture.

Evan Moor’s Geography Skill Sharpeners is a must have for your Geography curriculum!
