We love doing pocket books!

We have done a few other History Pockets from Evan Moor so we were so excited to try this one!

This one is geared for first through third grades. With my three kids we span several grades and levels. Ella is in fifth grade, and Abi and Alvin are in second grade. I love that this works for multiple grades and levels at the same time! I have Ella do more reading and go into a little bit more detail than with the twins.

We started this in the middle of August and I have spread it out to finish right before we start our Thanksgiving and winter break.

It is perfect for fall themed unit studies, social studies, and history! As you can tell, we like to combine subjects and what the kids on work on.

I started by deciding which of the activities and projects each kid would do. I customize it to what I know each child can (or will) do. I know my son Alvin dislikes coloring so he doesn't do much, but loves to glue. So he gets more of the gluing. Whereas Abi loves to color, so she gets more of the pages that need to be colored. Ella, the oldest, gets a combination.

The reading parts I only printed out for my older one and we take turns reading. She has dyslexia so I don't force too much reading at once.

Pockets!

I go through and figure out how many pockets total we need.

I use the large construction paper to create the pockets and put those together first.

We go through each chapter one by one starting at the beginning.

I love that the pockets are set up in a great order that makes it easy to follow.

We put the pocket names on them and put the items we need to complete for each one in their own pockets.

This way all the pages are easy to access, we know where they all are, and know what still needs to be done.

Activities!

Here are some of the activities and projects that we completed for the first pocket.

We read the short story about the trip.

Then they read each of the four clues and put them in order and glued it all to the construction paper.

Mayflower Boats!

For the first pocket, one of the activities was to create the Mayflower boat.

I provided each kid with the papers to be able to create their boats.

It shows the outside of the boat, the inside, and then information about it.

What would they bring?

We talked about what the Pilgrims' brought with them on the boat and what we might bring.

The lists they made in their chests were things like clothes, blanket & pillow, water, food, compass, etc.

They did a good job about thinking about what they would need! I thought they might say the need to bring their tablets or a television!

Words To Know!

Every pocket includes the words to know for that pocket. We find these touch on the main points of the pocket and are important to remember.

We go over them right after reading the student reading packet for the pocket. Then we cut and complete the page.

All of the completed projects and pages go back into the pocket we took them out from.

When we are done we will keep it as a memory book of what we learned.
